Throwback Thursday: The Platters

Voted as the 351st song of all-time by Rolling Stone Magazine, this is a song that helped put the Platters on the map for all music. Their 2nd single, it would go on to hit #1 this day in 1956.

It would later be covered, and become popular again with the version that Freddie Mercury and Queen would later release. However, nothing is as good as the original.

So here it is, your Throwback for Thursday, 'The Great Pretender'

The Bleeding Edge: Jail

Or is it "Jaill?" I have no clue, but I know these guys rock. Hailing from good old Milwaukee, WI, Jail brings the poppy, jangly, twangy, goodness. Their LP THERE'S NO SKY (OH MY MY) ranges from mellow country ("Stuffed") to garage-pop gems ("Love Takes Shots" and "Beggar Sincere" highly recommended.) If you're in Wisconsin, catch them at the High Noon Saloon March 9, before they take off for SXSW.

"The Biggest Nugget of Them All"

"Lips Locked With No Key"

"No Mindless Love"

Throwback Thursday: Paula Abdul

It's that time again, and we are going to Throw it back to a time before American Idol made Paula Abdul a household name as a judge. Why, she was a household name before, because she was 'Forever Your Girl', especially in the 90s.

The story of Paula Abdul is well known. Once a Laker Girl, then a choreographer to Janet Jackson, it was only natural that Paula would take center stage. So when she broke out in the late 80s with her debut album 'Forever Your Girl', the face of pop music was never the same.

After releasing the 1st (Knocked Out) and 2nd (The Way That You Love Me) singles, it was obvious that Paula's star was on the rise. However, it was when she released the 3rd single, 'Straight Up', that put her on the celestial map.

Released in November of 1988, the single would help boost 'Forever Your Girl' to the top of the charts. It would also hit #1, and stay there for 3 weeks this day in 1989.

So here is your Throwback for Thursday...

Weird for Wednesday: Todd Rundgren

If you know Todd Rundgren from just his hits (which he's had several), you don't know the full spectrum of how wonderful and strange his music is, and how odd some of his history is (not to mention the amazing feather ensemble in the "Hello, It's Me" clip below). From his pseudonymous efforts to his experimentation to his work on TV shows such as Crime Story and Pee Wee's Playhouse, Rundgren has proved himself to be a workhorse who can both tickle the pop fancy and branch out into some pretty odd territory.

"Hello, It's Me"

"Piss Aaron"

"Bread"

"You Cried Wolf"

(With Taj Mahal) "Never Mind The Why And Wherefore"
