Bleeding Edge: HALSTON!

HALSTON! bills themselves as "a two-man, one-take Cosmiche American Disco & Western band from Boston, Massachusetts," but that's only scratching the surface. A nearly undefinable mix, the band really needs to be heard to be understood. "From Here to Here" is a beautiful dance song with a bit of old-school flair, and "Big Boy Car" pulls out plaintive vocals and a mean keyboard. "Gurl Grope" hearkens back to the girl-band songs of the 60's--but for the excellent twist of male vocals, it could be a just-discovered Shangri-La's song.


If you listen to nothing else, listen to "Terry Jive," which weaves futuristic noises into a jazzy ditty, through their MySpace page. It's far and away better than any of this summer's radio hits.

Hello to all the lovers out there, we are back for another edition of Tappin That Azz Thursday.

Today we are going to take it back to 1987. The year of the Iran Contra Affair and Love Affairs. The Year when Reagan wanted to tear down that wall, and the year of the man trying to get into those walls, if you know what I mean ;)

1987 was an explosive year for all the lovers, and Musicians as well. In particular, George Michael. With the release of his 1st solo album, after departing WHAM!, the artist was going in a completely different direction. No more bubble gum pop for this man; and a man indeed he was. To declare his newfound freedom, what better way than to release a sexual anthem.

On June 1, 1987, George Michael would release one of Music History’s most controversial songs and videos. Banned from Radio and Television Airplay, the song would become a hit for the British singer. It would also become one of the songs to help solidify sex in mainstream music, as well as getting listeners in the mood.

Throwback Thursday: New Order

The 1980s was a decade of innovation. Music styles from the 70s, such as punk and disco, had inspired a new sound. One that was rock, while still being dance. This sound was New Wave. Spawned from the late 70s, New Wave solidified itself in the 80s. It was also mostly culture based, seeing that a large majority in the New Wave Genre were part of the 2nd British Invasion. Artists such as Adam Ant, The B-52’s, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, INXS, Pet Shop Boys and Talking heads were instrumental in creating a cutting edge sound that can still be heard in music until this very day.

Another act that helped New Wave to be popular, was the UK based group, New Order. In 1980, the group had newly re-formed after having a devastating end to their previous group, Joy Division, in which the lead singer had committed suicide.

Their sound was unique, it was different, it was unlike anything anyone had heard before. It was a sound of post-punk combined with that of an electric feel. All together, it created a different genre of Dance music. Heavily influenced by the club scene of New York, the group released the album, “Power, Corruption & Lies“; the 1st single from the album was ‘Blue Monday’. It would later be recognized as one of the best selling 12” singles of all time. However, the group was not finished.

In 1986 and 1987, they would release their 4th album “Brotherhood” as well as “True Faith”. At this time, these would prove to stand the test of time for the group. Although ‘True Faith’ would bring them billboard acclaim, as well as being accompanied by a unique and highly regarded conceptual video, the other single, ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’, was seen more as a cult success. Although it was not a stand out hit for the group, it is seen as one of their best, and is still played on numerous occasions. The single itself has even been covered countless times, however nothing can beat the original.
