Fashion Friday: George Michael

Welcome to today's entry, Fashion Friday... It has been a long time since we have done this, but I thought it was best to resurect one of the most important topics that is soooo intertwined with Music. So, who better to spotlight than George Michael?

In the early 1990's George Michael went into the decade as not only as a sex symbol, but someone of a Fashion Icon. An Icon in not what he wore, but mainly who he showed. After having released the popular album, 'Faith', Michael's relationship with Sony Records began to falter. So when he released the single, 'Freedom 90', it was seen as an ode to his current situation with the record giant. When it came time to release the video, Michael refused to cooperate with then director David Fincher. This would be a decision that would make the British singer even more popular.

Today an Iconic video, Fincher enlisted the prowess and visual persuasion of the Supermodel. The Supermodel in the early 90s seemed to have rule the world, and in the case of 'Freedom', the airwaves as well. It would feature Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, as well as others. However, behind the beautiful ones, there stood some symbolic imagery for the singer. Such items that made him famous, were seen to be destroyed. Items like his famed leather jacket, was set on fire. The Jukebox featured in the 'Faith' video, along with his guitar, was blown up. This was a metamorphosis.

However, George Michael was not finished. One song that had been recorded while still with Sony Records, was eventually released. That song would be 'Too Funky'. In its release, it was part of a compilation album, 'Red Hot+Dance', with all procedes donated to the same cause, which is the fight against HIV & AIDS.

The video would be somewhat similar to 'Freedom', in that it would once again have models as the primary focus. However, George Michael would make an appearance this time, seeimg to be the director of all these wonderful Fashion divas. Those would include, Linda Evangelista (once again), Beverly Peele, Estelle Hallyday, and the debut of Tyra Banks.

Having noted both songs, it is obvious to see the impact George Michael has had on the Fashion world, as well as the Music one. There are artists still emulating what he crafted. A few examples would be Beyonce and Lady Gaga. For Beyonce's 'I Am... Tour' promotional photos, she wore the famous motorcyle jumper seen in the 'Too Funky' video.

As for Lady GaGa, she is seen wearing the Robo-cop/C3PO inspired metal outfit, also displayed in the 'Too Funky' video, for her own, 'Paparazzi'...

... And Just think, all of this was done simply by creating imagery that can coincide with music, to create a whole new world... So, enjoy your Fashion Friday, and please try and look stylish while doing so ;o)

New Music Tuesday Time: Thanksgiving Edition

Welcome to another edition of New Music Tuesday. Although Tuesday is generally the day when new music drops, because of the Thanksgiving week, everything has been released a day early. But, this also gave us a whole day to properly review the new CD’s out there, as well as make this an extended edition off of Manic Music Monday… So what’s on Tap?

Shakira - She Wolf

This is the long awaited, 3rd studio album from the Colombian singer, and it is finally being released after being pushed back an entire month. Originally supposed to be released in October in the US, it was only released in global circulation, then later in the States. Aside from that, the album is a reinvention of sorts, as we see Shakira make a complete change in her sound. Originally rooted in rock, this album is a complete departure from those roots. With production from Timbaland & the Neptunes, Shakira makes herself an Electropop diva, never really missing a mark. With its lead single, ‘She Wolf’, the tone of the album is set, as we hear with other singles, such as ‘Give It Up To Me’ (Featuring Lil Wayne). Look for other songs, ‘Did It Again’ (Featuring Kid Cudi), ‘Gypsy’, & ‘Men In This Town’, to be radio-play worthy… A must have for this week...

Jay Sean - All or Nothing

This is the 3rd album from the British R&B singer, however in the U.S. it is his debut. A new face to the American Music scene, Jay Sean fits right in. With his lead single, ‘Down’ (Featuring Lil Wayne), we saw a definite hit from across the pond. By being a guest artist on other’s singles, Jay Sean has already created a name for himself for many years to come. Look for other songs, ‘Ain’t Got You’ (Featuring Drake), ‘Do You Remember’ (Featuring Lil Jon & Sean Paul), & ‘Stay’, to be other singles released... Another must have for this week...

Birdman - Pricele$$

This is the 4th album released from the Cash Money Records founder, and it seems the family can do no wrong. An album with collaborations from Lil Wayne, Timbaland, Drake, T-Pain, Kevin Rudolf, & Bun B, this is a Rap Music Lover’s dream. Look for the Songs, ‘Money To Blow’ (Featuring Drake & Lil Wayne), ‘4 My Town (Play Ball), & ‘Always Strapped’ to be successful singles… A must have for all my Rap enthusiasts...

Angie Stone - Unexpected

This is the 5th studio album from the R&B songstress and her smooth R&B vibes are still the way they were when she first debuted. The lead single, ‘I Ain’t Hearin’ You’, was released in October, and pretty much set the tone for the album, leading into her next single ‘Why Is It’… A must have for all my Lovers & Ladies...

BeyoncĂ© - I Am… Sasha Fierce (Re-Release)

This is the long awaited re-release of the hit album from the R&B singer-songwriting-actress-wife of Jay-Z. However, there are only 3 new tracks. However, of these 3 only one stands out, which is the highly acclaimed collaboration with Lady GaGa, ‘Videophone’. A must have to complete the CD...

Manic Music Monday!!!

Hello ladies & gents, I thought I would take the time to spotlight the new Monday Releases...

While most of you were sleeping in preparation for a busy week, 3 new highly anticipated albums were released. In the texting community, all three get a wonderful O M G, especially after last night's American Music Awards Performances!!!

So what's on tap?

Adam Lambert - For Your Entertainment

The American Idol runner-up, may have only just been that (a winner in our hearts), but the Buzz about his album proves to be worth it. With its lead single, 'For Your Entertainment', the title is quite the truth. Entertaining the album is, especially, the Lady GaGa written track, 'Fever', filled with so much innuendo, it makes you want to... well use your imagination ;). Well worth the purchase, so download it now via Itunes...

Rihanna - Rated R

Rated R is a perfect title for this album, because the songstress has finally shed her PG-13 roots and becomes more than a woman on this album. If the last album was titled 'Good Girl Gone Bad', then this one should be title 'Bad Girl Gone Crazy'; of course crazy in a good way. The album is a definite exploration of the past year's events, and doesn't shy away. The numerous collaborations prove Rihanna a music superstar, especially the song 'Rockstar 101'. Slash guests on this track, and makes the songstress more than a pop act. Download Rated R now!!!

Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

Now to the long awaited 'Fame Monster'... What can I say, Lady Gaga is more than a 'pop' act, and she proves so on the re-release of 'The Fame', by adding 8 new tracks. Not only is her writing supreme, but the melodies are all infectious, and all tracks have the power to be released as individual singles. Each song carries its own life. If 'Bad Romance' was released as a teaser to this, then it certainly does the job, because 'The Fame Monster' leaves its listeners wanting more & more, while also making us 'Speechless'... Download now via Itunes...

The Bleeding Edge: Hermanos Calavera

Ecatepec's Hermanos Calavera, masked men crafting groovy music, are an excellent example of the Mexican surf rock genre. Their sound is simultaneously sweet and evil and always catchy. "Jinete Calavera," (a personal favorite) is a gorgeous instrumental with a slow beginning that builds to a frenzied pace; "Catacumbas" pulls classic surf rock together with distinctive vocals.

Welcome to another Hybrid edition of Tappin' That Azz While Throwin' It Back Thursday! Today we are gonna take you back to the 1970's where the then Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, had them movin' & groovin' on the Dancefloor as well as in between the sheets ;o)...

One song in particular, which was released in 1975, launched the songstress into mainstream success as well as causing a stir in all the bedrooms across the world. It has even been called one of the sexiest stimulated orgasms ever to be recorded... and its 16 minutes long too! (However, the version shown, is what you would call a 'Quickie' hehe)

Phew, who needs Viagara, when you can have Donna Summer's smooth voice...

Can't Get It Out Of My Head SOTD: Robbie Williams, "Wonderwall"

Weird Wednesday: King Crimson

Cult prog favorites King Crimson have had a long and stormy history, full of bandmate dramas, lineup changes, short-lived name changes, and general indifference from mainstream media outlets. For all that, the band has survived for 4 decades, creating inventive and varied music that incorporates a wonderfully wide variety of influences and styles. King Crimson is one band that transcends mere weirdness and lands solidly in the category of "amazing."

MySpace Mondays... Remove Silence

Welcome back to another edition of MySpace Mondays, today we bring you music from South America... and no it is not Samba! This time it is Metal, and how refreshing it is... check it out for yourself on MySpace:

http://www.myspace.com/removesilence

TAKEN FROM MySpace:

'Remove Silence’s album Fade begins by dialoguing with the end. The first song leaves no doubt about it: it’s called The End has Begun. It’s the trouble brought about by love and other ailments ("To cross the lines/I need you more than I have") in the words and chords of Hugo Mariutti (guitars and vocals), Alexandre Souza (bass and vocals), Fabio Ribeiro (keyboards) and Edu Cominato (drums and vocals). Heavy and melodic condiments manipulated with the wisdom of experienced chefs. It’s worth noting that although a relatively new group, it’s formed by musicians that have been involved with the heaviest of Brazilian music: Mariutti used to be in Shaman and currently plays with Andre Matos, as well as his work with Henceforth; Ribeiro has played with Angra, Shaman and also plays with Andre Matos; and finally, Cominato currently plays with Tempestt, the band that toured with Jeff Scott Soto in Europe and Latin America in 2008. Produced by the band themselves and mastered in the US by israeli Maor Appelbaum, the song Fade is irresistibly groovy and spatial. The high point could be the horror-movie-soundtrack-like second part. This song, which has been played by Brasil 2000 FM radio station, has also been turned into a video clip by the hands of director Patrick Nicholas Korb. Pressure commences loud and brimming with riffs: “Now you know who you are” is the sentence. The low toned piano of Dirty Ashtray’s intro announces that it won’t be the best day. After all, in other to face it, the character in the song has a supply of pills, burning cigarettes that pile up in the ashtray and existential questionings. It's one of the most beautiful and striking songs in the album. Fast Turnover carries forward the character’s fears, but praises constant parting. Where will the children live flirts with desolation. Quite a sad song, where yelling and whispering take turns, as in an Ingmar Bergman piece, so as to question the kids’ fate. Ministry of ghostland and Black again go for innovative noises, constructions and tempos. The spatial sonority, for lack of a better word, of the initial tracks is back with When the madness fills the space and Out of time. Dream Brother, written by the ill-fated north-american Jeff Buckley, brings the album to an end. And we don’t miss the silence at all.

Hello to all my lovers & ladies all over the world, it is time for another edition of Tappin' That Azz Thursday, oh and what a song we have!

Now if there is anyone who knows about 'Tappin'', it is for sure Mr. R. Kelly. When it comes to makin' love songs, this man knows how to do it literally... and figuratively! Already a legend for Tappin' on this blog, he once again brings us a new Ballad that makes the listeners want to get their groove on. However, this time he is sharing the love by singing with R&B Singer/Song-writer Keri Hilson.

What is most certainly to become a bedroom anthem, it is certainly going to be 'Number One'.

So enjoy 'Tappin' That Azz', I know I certainly will ;o)

Throwback Thursday: Lisette Melendez

Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday… for this week, we must go back to the early 1990s when a certain Genre of Music came to be at the peak of its popularity. This Genre would eventually be known as Freestyle.

Originally created in the 1980s, Freestyle was a type of music that was influenced by numerous styles. Whether it was Hip Hop, Dance, or New Wave, it was sure to be used in mixing tracks that would keep the masses dancing. Its typically a style that is grounded in Hip Hop, Latin, and Electronic music, and can sometimes be referred to as Latin Hip Hop. However, it can also be seen as techno.

One artist that became popular and known from this style was that of Lisette Melendez.

Born In Spanish Harlem, 1967, Melendez was heavily influenced by the Latin music that was within the community, as well as the Hip Hop flavor of the times. Mixed together, this allowed her, as well as many others to become followers of the Latin Hip Hop genre that was becoming more and more popular everyday. It is noted that Melendez herself was influenced by fellow artist Lisa Lisa, who achieved popularity in this genre.

It wasn’t until 1988, that Melendez started her own career, as a back up singer for musical artists, Sweet Sensation and Samantha Fox. After many club tours, this was when she began to record her 1st hit single that would make her known in the Music World.

Titled ‘Together Forever’, the song would catapult Melendez on the Dance charts, becoming an artist identified with the Genre that made her a star.

So here is your Throwback for Thursday, ‘Together Forever’…

New Music Tuesday Time... Albums Of The Week

Wale - Attention Deficit

This is the long awaited Debut Album from the D.C. Rapper that was originally supposed to be released in September. However, Wale decided to go on tour, and the album was delayed up until now. The first single, ‘Chillin’’, featuring Lady Gaga was an instant success as well as an indicator on what was to come from the rapper. All in all a very well produced and eclectic album, which includes many other collaborations and guests such as, Jazmine Sullivan, Gucci Mane, Bun B, The Neptunes, Cool & Dre, Producer Mark Ronson, as well as many more. A definite must have this week.

Dashboard Confessional - Alter The Ending

This is the 6th studio album from the Emo-Alternative rockers, and will be released in 2 versions: 1 acoustic, the other original. The entire album had already been released a week previous, only as a pre-listen via MySpace, but the first single ‘Belle of The Boulevard’ was released in October. A must have for the many Dashboard fans, as well as the rest of the listening community.

Flyleaf - Memento Mori

This is the 2nd album from the Alternative Rock band, and there are no signs of a Sophomore slump here. Instead, it looks as if the star is rising even more for this group. The title f the album, translated from Latin, ‘Be Mindful of Death’, reminds us of the original influence from this album, which is primarily rooted in Christian Rock. A heavy and deep album, it originally had 30 songs written, in which half were chosen. The 1st single, ‘Again’, was released in late August, and the 2nd single, ‘Beautiful Bride’, was released in October. A must have for this week.

Switchfoot - Hello Hurricane

This is the 7th studio album from the Christian/Alternative Hard rockers, and was originally under production in 2007. However, many delays occurred along the way, as different record companies’ decisions helped stall the release of the album. Its first single, ‘Mess of Me’, was originally played in concert, the 2nd single. A must have this week.

Hollywood Undead - Desperate Measures

This is the 2nd studio album from the Rap-Metal group, and what a refreshing surprise it is. Already MySpace Music legends, it was time for the group to take the next step and release this album, after having many singles & demos, and having their previous debut, ‘Swan Songs’, be a hit with the Madden NFL crowd. Look for this to be a sleeper hit…

Throwback Thursday: Queen

Welcome to another edition of Throwback Thursday. Today we are going to take it back to 1984, when Queen was at the pinnacle of their career. Famous for their huge rock shows, and eloquent tracks, the group decided to change their sound to fit the changing times.

In the 80s, the sound of music change from simply rock, into something more synth inspired. For Queen, this was a reinvention into something new and fresh. Therefore in 1984, Queen released the album, 'The Works', which was both rock and synth inspired. The lead single from the album was 'Radio Ga Ga', however, it did not cause quite a stir as its next single, at least the video.

In April of '84, Queen released the single 'I Want To Break Free', and the song was a definite hit for the group, not controversial at all. However, when the video was released it featured lead singer Freddie Mercury in drag. This to the public, was seen as a declaration of his sexual preference, but it was really in ode to the famous soap opera, Coronation Street. All in all, a parody.

So here it is, your Throwback for Thursday, Queen's 'I Want To Break Free':
