International Spotlight: Rodrigo y Gabriela
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero are a Duo that hail from Mexico City, Mexico.
The two met as teenagers and shared a love of Heavy Metal Music, in which they both participated in the Mexican Metal group Tierra Acida.
As the band dissolved, the duo crafted their acoustic style by teaching and playing in different clubs.
After feeling the opportunities in the Americas were slim for success, the duo traveled to Dublin, Ireland. While there, they worked as street performers on the famous Grafton Street and in the Temple bar district.
It was in Dublin where they networked with many other musical contacts, such as Damien Rice, who would later ask them to join his tour.
In 2001, The released their 1st album, “Foc”. In 2003, they released their 2nd solo album, “Re-Foc”. In 2004, a live album entitled, “Live: Manchester and Dublin”, was released.
In 2006, they released the self-titled album, “Rodrigo y Gabriela”. It would become the #1 album in Ireland.
The album includes covers of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ & Metallica’s ‘Orion’.
The Songs ‘Tamacun’ & ‘Diablo Rojo’ would become best selling singles from the Duo’s Album.
In 2006, they released another Live album, “Live In Japan”.
In September, 2009, they will release a new album, entitled 11:11. The album contains a collaboration entitled, 'Atman', with Testament guitarist, Alex Skolnick. The single provides a powerful display of their acoustic talents.
Look for Rodrigo y Gabriela to blaze up the International charts with their new release.

Fashion Friday: Serge Gainsbourg
Husband of Jane Birkin, father to Charlotte, Serge Gainsbourg truly embodied the 60s mod look. Gainsbourg favored dark pinstriped suits, shirts unbuttoned at the throat, well-made shoes, and double-breasted jackets--classics sifted through the swinging sensibility that strode through Europe in the 60s. Where Gainsbourgh's sensibility really shines, however, is in the film that accompanies his distinct songs. But you don't have to take MY word for it.* (Sorry, embedding disabled, so you'll have to click through....)
*RIP, Reading Rainbow.
The Bleeding Edge: Exohxo
While the amazing Speaker Speaker is on hold, a couple of the guys from the band (Danny Oleson and Jasen Samford) together with Hiromi Dougherty, Benjamin Hunter, Jason Jordan, Kyle Porter, and Johnny Oglem, have been putting in time on Exohxo, which is decidedly more mellow--but no less delightful. Even though the songs tend toward an orchestral/folk feeling, there are at least a few rocking moments (for example, the end of "Same As Always" and the chorus of "Night Watchman"). "Dirty Plates" (highly recommended) has just a touch of the Weakerthans; the violin and vocals combination on "Beacons" (also highly recommended) reminds me of the best of melancholy mid-60s pop; and "Pink Fades to Gray" and "Untitled Song About Cats" pull in a hint of country twang to emphasize the wistful feel. I know that I have a thing for sad songs, and Exohxo certainly does sad well.

Tappin' That Azz Thursday: Bump n' Grind By R. Kelly
Once again, we are here with another installment of Tappin That Azz Thursday.
For this track we’re going to take it back again to 1993. What can I say, 1993 seemed to be the year when everyone wanted to Tap That Azz, and what better music to tap it to than that of Mr. R. Kelly’s.
Robert Sylvester Kelly, who hailed from the Southside of Chicago, had broke on through to the music scene in 1993 with the debut release of, ‘12 play’. This album was a bedroom must for all the lovers across the globe (and still is). However, one song stood out from the entire album, and still stands out from Mr. Kelly’s entire catalogue. Hailed as a bedroom booty tappin’ anthem, ‘Bump n’ Grind’ would go on to top the charts for 12 weeks becoming the longest running R&B single of its current time. It would also become a hit abroad, meaning not only Americans wanted to ‘get it on’, but also others around the world.
So here it is, enjoy it while Tappin That Azz:

Throwback Thursday: Steam
The 1960s was a decade of liberation and change; especially in the Music industry. The face of pop music had become diversified. Many artists were not only heavily influenced by Rock n’ Roll, but also by R&B. One such group that was influenced, was Steam.
The story of Steam’s origins is quite confusing and unique. Originally founded in Bridgeport, CT, as “The Chateaus” during the early 60s, they had broken up and gone their separate ways. Three of those members: Gary DeCarlo, Paul Leka, and Dale Frashuer, would eventually cross paths again in 1969. DeCarlo had become a solo artist working with former band mate Leka, who had began a career as a producer. Incidentally one night, Dale Frashuer had made a trip to the studio where the other gentlemen were recording a B-side for Mercury Records. Of course, the three men recollected a song that they had failed to record as the Chateaus, and began to work on it. In this song, DeCarlo sang lead vocals, as well as playing the keyboard while the other men blended different tracks into the background. After the song was finished, it was added as a B-side track, from a non-existent band called “Steam”. However, the trio never anticipated the success that was soon to be generated from the record.
When Mercury had given the albums to the radio stations they never believed that they would play the B-side of the track, which indeed a DJ in Georgia had done. Because of this, the song had become an instant hit, due to requests and radio play.
The single would go on to climb the charts reaching #1 in December of 1969. In later years, the song would have such an impact, that it not only became a favorite of the general public, but of that in sports arenas. To this very day, the Chicago White Sox play the song as an anthem to the opposing pitcher when he is pulled from a game. It has also influenced the way younger generations listen to music, as it has been sampled in 2 songs just this year: Kristinia DeBarge’s, ’Goodbye’, and Wale’s, ’Chillin’, featuring Lady GaGa. The song itself still has been able to sell as well. Recent numbers figure it to have sold at least 6.5 million records to this very day.
So here it is, the single that was spawned in one night: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.

Wednesday Weirdness: Klaatu
"Klaatu Barada Nikto!"
You may know it from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," or perhaps from "Army of Darkness," and if you're a mid-90's politics buff, you may remember hearing it from a congressman (of course, leave it to the AP to get the spelling wrong.)
Less known is the Canadian prog band formed in 1973, one rumored to be a Beatles side project, but in reality consisting of John Woloschuk and Dee Long, soon joined by Terry Draper. The band made five albums, managed to be covered by The Carpenters, began an ill-fated animated project, and parted, all by 1981. Their sound is widely varied, so it is rather difficult to pick a few songs to represent their body of work:
"Sir Bodsworth Rugglesby III" (The Beatles comparison easily seen)
"Long Live Politzania"
The Carpenters, covering "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"

Tap That Azz Tune Of The Night...
Hello readers, I come with the first installment of Tap That Azz Thursday. To be more clear this is basically an entry geared towards songs that make you wanna "Tap That Azz". I figured this is for the lovers, and since we are also in "Throwback Thursday", why not throw this installment to the 90s. The 90s was full of wonderful icons who hit the pinnacles of their career. Also those who were finally not affraid to show their sexuality.
When the youngest of the Jacksons, Janet, decided on a musical career, most were afraid how she would come across. At first, Janet, was a sweet girl next door whom everyone loved. However, as she grew, she became one of the most predominant divas of our time. With the release of "Control" in the 1980s, she was no longer the sweet girl next door, but a woman: She was Ms. Jackson, if you're "Nasty". In the early 90s with the release of "Rhythm Nation", she garnered a strong independent front, but still lacked that sexual appeal. However, something was to eventually change. She went from Ms. Jackson, to simply Janet.
In 1993, she released her self titled album: janet. She also released herself to the world as not only a strong, independent woman, but one who was a real sexual being. From this album came some of the most sensual songs. Ballads like "Thats the way love goes", "Again", & "Anytime, Anyplace" helped solidified Janet as not only a best selling artist but a sexual icon.
One such song that has become a personal favorite, and one definitely to get you in the mood to "Tap That Azz" this week comes from the 'janet.' album. The song "If", which was the 2nd single, from this, not only had interesting lyrics but a very enjoyable video that could certainly get you to dance if not in the mood to "Tap That Azz"...

Throwback Thursday: 70s Edition
So Since this the innaugural week of the blog, I figured it best to go with the 70s. Mainly because the main logo is a Disco Ball and I do tend to love to, well DISCO!
So the main Throwback on tap is "I Feel Love" by, Donna Summer. In my opinion, this song set the standard for what was to come in the following decades; the synth sound of New Wave and Electronic era of the future. Not only was it a different sound than all of the standard disco songs, producer Giorgio Marauder had created a new sound that was both refreshing and strange.
To this very day, the song still sounds as fresh and new as the day it was created, so much so that even Madonna had used "I Feel Love" in the opening of her best selling "Confessions"tour. To this day, it still can rival that of the dance songs of the current day...
So here it is, The Throwback Thursday Tune Of The Day :o)

Wednesday Weirdness: Big F*ckin Skull
Today's weirdness is a gem from my formative punk past, Eau Claire, Wisconsin's Big F*uckin Skull.
Ok, so I admit, they're less weird and more obscure, but as a brand-new, fresh-faced college kid, this was the first live band that taught me to appreciate over the top showmanship, enthusiasm, and general mayhem. Their lyrics were offensive, sound repetitive, and their schtick derivative at best, but they played their hearts out, and people packed Nate's Dungeon, the DIY venue. It was all about the attitude, which Big F*ckin Skull had in spades. And I loved it.
A (semi-obnoxious) sampler of their first recording, Six Skulls Against the World--my favorites, "Skulls That Ride City Buses" and "Four Skulls and Seven Ears Ago," begin at 2:04 and 5:00, respectively; and the scream-along anthem that best sums their appeal (and qualifies as the theme song for my first year of college), "I found a Skull (and It Ain't My Skull)" at 8:10:
A live recording, a year or three before I first saw them:
To my delight, they are still around, (of course, because you cannot kill what cannot be killed) though now fighting the good fight from Minneapolis, MN--"Tin Skull Soldier" and "Thickskull Himself" highly encouraged.

New Music Tuesday Time!
So here it is, the 1st edition of New Music Tuesday for The Music On Tap! So what do we have on tap this new and wonderful weekly holiday? Well lets see, there is loads of great new music, however these days it is getting a bit hard to sift through to find what is actually good.
Picks 2 Click: New Albums Of The Week
Picks 2 Click: New Albums Of The Week
Calvin Harris- Ready For The Weekend
Of course a dance album would make the cut this week, and what better choice than that of Calvin Harris. The main influence I feel from this album is that of a 70s Disco. The main hit of the entire album is “I’m not alone”, which includes a great remix by DJ extraordinaire Deadmau5... A must get for the Dancing Divas and Dudes
Sean Paul - Imperial Blaze
Guess who is back? After taking a hiatus, Sean Paul is back with his new album ‘Imperial Blaze’. Expected was the reggae, what wasn’t was how good it still actually sounds. With the first single, ‘So Fine’, it is and has become a dancehall hit, however there are many more to come. In fact watch for “Hold My Hand’ with Keri Hilson to rival that off the album.
Kate Earl - Kate Earl
The 2nd album from the singer/songwriter is destined to make a large splash in 2009. Already listed as the Itunes free single of the week, with “Melody”, the music of this artist is sure to rise. Ms. Earl has crafted a similar sound, musically to Duffy, Amy Winehouse, yet also that of Jem, Feist, as well as that of Imogean Heap. Definitely a must grab for the week.
Singles Of The Week
Replay - I.Y.A.Z.
Now this was a pleasant surprise, very radio friendly, and one of those special love songs with a good dance beat. A mix of Hip Hop and Reggae; very reminiscent of Sean Kingston, as well as a good crossover to pop song.
Stronger - Mary J Blige
The 2nd single dropped by the Queen of Hip Hop & Soul, this unlike the 1st has a different tone. With ‘The One”, you feel the urban beats pound through. In this 2nd single, you hear that of a ballad, once again another love song. A definite hit for the R&B charts.
I Wanna Go Crazy - David Guetta with Wil. I. Am.
One of the world's greatest DJ's has done it again with the 3rd teaser single from his upcoming album. I wanna go crazy has the right beats to make the dance crowd do exactly what the title says. A must get for the clubber who just loves to dance, dance, and dance.
