For this edition, we are going to take it back to 1994. What a magical year that was, Lorena Bobbitt was found not guilty for severing her husband’s special lil man friend, The Clintons were in the Whitehouse, and The Buffalo Bills lost their 4th consecutive Super Bowl. What can I say, it was a year where the motto ‘Love Is Pain‘ came to reality, so for this edition we are going to tell you about a little song that can embody this all the way…
When Nine Inch Nails formed in 1988, the general public did not know what to make of them. What was their sound? Was it electronic, was it punk, was it metal? Who knew, who cared… it just sounded great (okay so its borderline Electronic-Industrial Rock)! With hits such as, ‘Head Like A Hole’, ‘Sin’, and ‘Happiness In Slavery’, their fans were heavily enthused. However it wouldn’t be until their next album, that they would get an even larger following.
In 1994, Nine Inch Nails released, ‘The Downward Spiral’, which would later become a critical and public success, debuting at number two on the Billboard charts; even Michael Jackson was said to be a fan of the album! However, as much as the album was a complete success, one single stood out from all of the rest.
With its blunt lyrics, beat pounding rhythms, and profane style, its no wonder this song made it to this edition. When the Music video was released, director Mark Romanek, created an imagery that was both disturbing, yet erotic. It would go on to impress many with its artistic value, yet outrage others with its taboo imagery. Hailed as one of the best songs and videos of all time I think the entire package speaks for itself. It certainly has the power to get one in the mood too, especially with lead singer, Trent Reznor, on display with phallic symbols, shacked and blindfolded… Phew, I’m getting hot just thinking about it… ;o)
So this one goes out to all of my BDSM lovers, 'Closer'… Hope you enjoy Tappin’ That Azz… But hopefully not too hard ;o)
