International Spotlight: Zap Mama

Zap Mama is an artist & musical group that originates in Belgium, but has its roots that grow far deeper throughout the world

Led by singer Marie Daulne, Zap Mama combines European and African cultures to create a sound all of its own. Throughout the music, it is apparent that the one influential instrument that is utilized is the voice while blending smooth R&B/Hip Hop beats

In Zap Mama's music, it is performed in not only French, but English as well

Singer Marie Daulne, was originally born in Isiro, Orientale, Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a small child, her father was killed, due to the mixed-race relations of her parents. From this, there is a large influence in her music. The song, ‘Gati’, was written for those who had saved her family at this time

Daulne, would later move as a child with her family to Belgium. It was during this period, many musicians would impact the young girl. Her influences included, Bob Marley, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, the Fat Boys, Etta James, and of course songs from the Congo

When Daulne became of age, she would later go back to Africa to discover and recover her roots. It was then, she would begin to take the voices of who she was and create a style of who she would become later

In 1989, Daulne would create the group ‘Zap Mama’. The group would consist of 5 female singers (Marie Daulne, Sylvie Nawasadio, Sabine Kabongo, Marie Alonso, & Sally Nyolo), that would mainly sing in acapella. They would also be channeling an African sound that was still very European

In 1991, they would release their debut album, self titled ‘Zap Mama’. While performing in the United States, the group would meet David Byrne, who be so taken with their music, that he wanted to release their early recordings. This re-issue would be known as, ‘Adventures in Afropea 1’. The album would become a world best seller

In 1994, Zap Mama would release their 2nd album, ‘Sabsylma’. It would be heard to have the influences of Australian, Indian, & Moroccan influences

Also during this time, there would be a documentary created about the group called, ‘Mizike Mama’

After a few years had passed, in 1997, the group would release the album, ‘7‘. This time, the album would feature not only female but male as well. It would also be the first time the group would use musical acoustic instruments. The album title would take its inspiration of the seven senses of a human: touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight, emotion, & the power to heal, calm and sooth with music, color, and harmony.

During this time, the group Zap Mama would transform Daulne into Zap Mama, herself, while still maintaining the eclectic group

In 1999, the album ‘A Ma Zone’, would be released. It would take its title after ‘Amazon’ and ‘In My Zone’; this describing Daulne’s stage presence and her performances

In the same year, Zap Mama would have a song from 'A Ma Zone' featured for the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. Zap Mama also would do a remake of the song ‘Jock-A-Mo’, originally released in 1953

In 2000, Marie Daulne would move to New York. This would make a heavy impact on her, as the album ‘Ancestry In Progress’ would later be released the same year. The album would go on to reach #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts. In addition to its release, a video for the song ‘Bandy Bandy’ would also be aired

Having moved back to Belgium, Daulne would then concentrate on her family, as well as working on another album. In 2007, Zap Mama would release the album ‘Supermoon’. The album would reflect her life experiences, especially her family life. One such song, ‘Princess Kesia’, is even dedicated to her daughter and her own transformation from baby to young lady.

Currently, Zap Mama has released the album ‘ReCreation’. On this particular album, Daulne’s daughter sings alongside her mother on the title track “ReCreation”. In addition, the album features the original members of Zap Mama singing together on the track ‘Singing Sisters’. For the album, the lead song, 'Hello To Mama', shows the latin influences especially on the songstress

On the album as well, are a few duets. The song ‘Drifting’ was in collaboration with G. Love. Another duet on the album was sung with Balil, entitled ‘The Way You Are’. However, the most unique of the duets, are two conducted with Vincent Cassel, called ‘Non, Non, Non’ & ‘Paroles Paroles’

Look for Zap Mama to heal the world with her soothing melodic voice as well as being a citizen of the world
