Throwback Thursday: Method Man

1994 was a year packed full of history. Nelson Mandela became President of South Africa, Bill Clinton gave his 1st state of the Union Address while also being investigated for Whitewater, and the Major League Baseball Association cancelled the second half of the baseball season due to the strike. All the while, music was once again creating history of its own.

As a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man had risen to the ranks as one of the most profound voices in the group. When it became apparent that he had what it took to go solo, he did just that. In late 1994, he released his 1st solo album entitled, ‘Tical’ and was very well received throughout the Music community. Singles such as, ‘Bring The Pain’, and ‘Release Yo’ Delf’ had became chart hits, garnering the album even more mainstream attention. However, in 1995, Method Man joined forces with Mary J. Blige and Puff Daddy to remix the song, ‘I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need To Get By’, from the album... what would come of this would be pure Music bliss.

In the remix version of the song, it contained samples and lyrics from other artists, such as the Notorious B.I.G.. In addition, ‘You’re All I Need To Get By” was a hit by the late greats Tammi Terrell & Marvin Gaye in 1968, but it was brought back to life when Mary J. Blige performed its chorus on Method Man’s single. The song that was created would also become an instant success.

On May 2, 1995, the song was released 6 months after the album, ‘Tical’, had debuted. It would go on to hit #1 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts and be certified platinum in single sales. The song would also become an ode to love for all of those within the Hip Hop community. Even now, the song is regarded as one of Hip Hop’s most influential songs ever made. Even abroad, it would be regarded highly, as it was included on the 40th anniversary CD of BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom.

So here it is, your Throwback for Thursday…
